Local musicians David and Jacob Bernz will be joined by New Hampshire’s master storyteller Andy Davis interweaving his tales with musical ballads the tell stories of their own. There will be a special set from singer-songwriter Matt Emmer of western Massachusetts, and the evening will end off with an old-fashioned pub sing where members of the local community will be called upon to lead us all in song.
David and Jacob Bernz are a father-son team of folksingers and songwriters hailing from New York State’s Hudson Valley region. David Bernz has been performing for over forty years as a solo artist and in groups such as Dave, Perry, Rande and Work o’ the Weavers, blending traditional folk with modern styles. He has toured the United States, Canada and Israel and he has won two Grammy awards for producing CDs for the legendary Pete Seeger. Jacob Bernz is one of the Valley’s most prolific songwriters with almost two-thousand original songs and several CDs to his credit, and has shared the stage with luminaries such as Tom Chapin, David Amram, Jackson Browne and Janis Ian. Together, they sing, harmonize and engage.
Andy Davis, a New Hampshire-based storyteller, got his start telling comic tales by candlelight in Mexican refugee camps 30 years ago. He’s been refining his craft ever since, entertaining audiences as far north as County Down, as far east as Paris, as far south as Bamako, and as far west as San Diego. His varied repertoire contains equal parts multicultural folklore, magical realism, grassroots history, and personal experience. He can tell a shaggy dog with the best of them, and then follow it up with a poignant family story laden with meaning. He is equally at home sharing the lore and legends of the mountains and woods of northern New England and creating verbal portraits of political courage.
Matt Emmer is a singer-songwriter based in western Massachusetts. His music bridges the many avenues of American folk music with contemporary sounds. Drawing from the deep well of traditional song and the raw honesty of indie rock, Matt creates music that is both rooted and exploratory. Performing at venues such a Club Passim, the Tarrytown Music Hall and the Clearwater Festival, and with luminaries such as Jackson Browne, Janis Ian and Arlo Guthrie, Matt invites audiences into a shared community with each song.
