On the anniversary of Pete Seeger’s birth, the Towne Crier is pleased to present a tribute in honor of an important person in our community here in Beacon, as well as the global community. Pete was not only a folk icon who influenced countless performers; his commitment to environmental, humanitarian and social justice causes have inspired millions to help create a better world.
When Pete passed in 2014, the Towne Crier held a celebration of his life. We invited people to share songs and their stories of Pete, and received an overwhelming response. Each year since then, we’ve celebrated his birthday with stories and songs.
This year, the celebration will be hosted by local folksinger David Bernz, author of a new book, “Pete Seeger – Chopping Wood, Thoughts and Stories of a Legendary American Folksinger.” The evening will feature special guest musicians, and the stage will also be opened up to those who wish to share a song written or inspired by Pete or a personal story about him. Those who wish to participate in the Open Mic portion of the evening should arrive early to sign up.
The evening is also the official local release of David’s book, which contains transcriptions of Pete’s spoken word with asides and commentary from other musicians and friends. Copies, “hot off the press,” will be available for purchase.
