Stephane Wrembel, recognized as one of the preeminent guitarists globally, specializes in the style of Django Reinhardt. With a career spanning the globe, he has released 18 recordings and toured incessantly since 2003. His original compositions have been featured in Midnight in Paris (“Bistro Fada”) and Vicky Cristina Barcelona (“Big Brother”). Midnight in Paris received the Grammy Award® for Best Compilation Soundtrack. He has shared the stage with iconic artists like Elvis Costello, Patti Smith, The Roots, Medeski Martin & Wood, and many more. His annual music festival, “Django A Gogo,” has gained global recognition as a premier event celebrating Django Reinhardt’s life and music.
Wrembel is releasing of a triptych–a three-part recording series—on Water Is Life Records. Phase I was released on April 12, followed by Phase II on April 19, and Phase III on April 26, 2024. The triptych, available now on three CDs, features improvisational pianist Jean-Michel Pilc and includes new original compositions by Wrembel and Pilc as well as select pieces by Django Reinhardt.
Jean-Michel Pilc, acclaimed for his improvisational prowess, is a pianist and composer with a distinguished career. He has performed alongside jazz legends worldwide, served as the musical director and pianist for Harry Belafonte, and engaged in memorable duets with opera singer Jessye Norman. Pilc has released several recordings with his trio and gained acclaim as a solo performer, with five critically acclaimed solo piano records. Currently residing in Montreal, he is a member of the Jazz Faculty at The Schulich School of Music of McGill University.
Wrembel says, “This triptych, this collection of three albums forming a whole, is a representation of a journey of a human life. This project is the most representative of my inner world, a mirror of my soul. I am very fortunate to be working with some of the greatest musicians on Earth including the admirable Jean-Michel Pilc on piano, one of the greatest pianists, a magician of the keys.”
For this very special show, Wrembel will be accompanied by his world-class band–Josh Kaye on guitar, Ari Folman-Cohen on bass and Nick Anderson on drums—with special guests Nick Driscoll on tenor sax/clarinet and Jean-Michel Pilc on piano promising to be a captivating musical experience.
