Red Door Duo – Mark Sganga

An evening of virtuoso guitarist/singer/songwriters!

Red Door Duo is composed of award-winning singer-songwriter and 2014 International Fingerstyle Guitar Champion, Helen Avakian, joining forces with acclaimed jazz, bluegrass, Brazilian fingerstyle guitarist, Dave Irwin.

Each is an established artist in their own right. Avakian has earned numerous accolades for her performance (voted “Favorite Acoustic Act” four times by Rhythm and News), songwriting (eight first prizes from the NewSongs Contest at the Walnut Valley Festival in Kansas) and has shared the stage with artists Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul and Mary), Mary Fahl of the October Project, guitar stars Pete Huttlinger, Muriel Anderson, and Christie Lenee, and she even did a touch of acting (along with guitar playing) in a performance with Vanessa Redgrave. Irwin has an illustrious career as a soloist featuring at Madison’s Brazilian Carnaval numerous times, and performing his solo guitar arrangement of The National Anthem on ESPN and at other sports events such as the World Olympic Style Wrestling Competition.

However, when Red Door Duo’s individual forces unite on stage, their combined influences form an entirely original and mesmerizing blend of acoustic traditions. They have thrilled audiences from the Midwest as headliners at the Walnut Valley Festival in KS, The Woodchppers Ball in Kent, OH, to New England with their wildly imaginative set lists, featuring captivating new works, contemporary covers, and even reinterpretations of Baroque and Classical masterworks. Through their music the two permit audiences an authentic glimpse into their ever-evolving musical partnership both on and off the stage.

“Much to marvel at… full of life and energy.”  Blair Jackson, Acoustic Guitar Magazine

“Like Joni Mitchell, Helen Avakian can turn lyrics inside out… Helen Avakian’s music touches a place within.”  John Barry, Poughkeepsie Journal

Mark Sganga is a virtuoso guitarist whose performance has enthralled audiences from Stockholm to Kuala Lumpur to the Thredbo Jazz Festival in Austrailia. Mark’s fingerstyle guitar weaves a rich tapestry of beautiful melody, dynamic rhythm, and imaginative improvisation.

Fusing influences from South America & around the world, Mark creates an entrancing travelogue, as an instrumentalist, bandleader, singer/songwriter & educator. He has been featured on tours and recordings with Indian violin virtuoso Dr. L. Subramaniam, alongside Larry Coryell & Herbie Hancock. He has played opposite the legendary Taj Mahal and Les Paul among other greats. Recently, Mark’s trio headlined the Clayton Jazz Festival opposite Bernie Williams. Mark also performed opposite John Oates of Hall & Oates, Phil Keaggy, Sam Bush, Bryan Sutton, Colin Linden, Kathy Mattea and other notable guitarists at the City Winery in Nashville, TN.

Mark is a repeat featured performer and judge at The Indiana State Fingerstyle Guitar Competition as well as a main-stage performer at the venerable Walnut Valley Festival in Wichita, KS where Mark won first place in the 2009 International Fingerstyle Guitar Competition.
