RED ROOSTER

Eilen Jewell's songs come on like the nakedness of a thunderstorm after a sultry day: "You show me the well, but you don't let me drink." When she hisses that she's "Too Hot to Sleep," you know she ain't talking about the weather, and you know exactly why she's "going some place where they never say your name." Her stage presence and the easy slide of her voice suggest the lifetime experience of a country torch singer from the '40s, having another go 'round in a fresh, new life. Eilen's heart-achingly hushed style and intimate grasp of roots music's wild graces are set to a swaying, irrepressible groove by her band, evoking classic country, folk and swing without feeling nostalgic. The Boston Globe also celebrates "the slow organic sway of her melodies, and the sensual way she rubs against the low end of her register..."

photoAlthough RED ROOSTER's roots remain firmly planted in Americana and Alt-Country, the band has created a highly original and urban-infused sound that landed them a gig at the 2008 Newport Folk Festival. Red Rooster shows vary from just its founders -- Jay Erickson (guitar and vocals) and Nat Zilkha (lead guitar) with a couple of acoustic guitars -- to an urban country orchestra complete with electric guitars, drums, horns, fiddle, and mandolin.
"The fact that Red Rooster has managed to capture the dichotomy of modern American roots is nothing short of astounding."-Americana UK
"New York's Red Rooster updates the somewhat tired alt-country genre."-Nashville Scene
"...a journey through the heart of Americana and roots music." -The Houston Chronicle
"The group shines." -Time Out NY
