ASHLEY DAVIS & Irish harpist CORMAC DE BARRA
St. Patrick's Day in our "pub"/bar!
Celtic singer/songwriter Ashley Davis was originally heavily influenced by the environment and music around her where she grew up in Kansas. After working as a songwriter in Nashville and then moving to Ireland to do a masters in traditional Irish music - Ashley's sound truly began to take shape. Now living in NYC, new colors are beginning to blend into an already eclectically soothing sound. Her sophomore album, Down By the Sea, has been tagged by critics and fans as one of the "best Celtic music albums of our time" (Irish Voice). Often compared to a wide range of artists, from Joan Baez to Sandy Denny, Ashley's style is a nod to many, but completely her own. Ashley was recently asked to take part in the LA Grammy museum's "Future Grammy Winner" series sponsored by Amex.
Cormac De Barra ~ best known as Clannad's harper, as well as with Moya Brennan's own band ~ comes from a family of traditional musicians and singers from Dublin with roots in County Cork. Having studied Irish harp with his grandmother, Róisín Ní Shé, in Dublin and then on to study concert harp in the USA with Leone Paulson, Cormac is now widely considered one of the great harpers of the Irish tradition. Cormac is no stranger to lending his unique musical styling's to enhance the sound of other artists. With such acts as Hazel O'Connor, The Chieftans, Dervish, Brian Kennedy and Liam O Maonlai calling upon Cormac's harping talents to build on their sound - Cormac is truly in demand these days. Most recently, Cormac was at the Towne Crier with Moya Brennan's band, with whom he was touring the globe, and also taking a central role in the Clannad reunion tour as their primary harper.
Five years ago, Cormac and Ashley met in the backyard of Cathy Jordan's (of Dervish) house. An immediate friendship was struck and plans for working together on Ashley's next album began to formulate. In 2009, in Dublin, they began work on Ashley's newest release, Down By the Sea, with Cormac's brother Fionan. What resulted is a beautiful meshing of styles, forging not only a new lifetime friendship between them, but also a new sound that will resonate likely through years to come.
